8月の終わり。うだるような暑さの中、新幹線と電車を乗り継ぎ、木製の大桶を日本で唯一つくることができる藤井製桶所を訪ねて、大阪府堺市へ。
ジブリ映画に出てきそうな大きな「樽」の形をした、というより樽そのものの事務所は、木桶作りの仕事がなくなり廃業が頭をよぎった時期に、「大桶をひっくり返したら建物になるじゃないか」と、作ってみたのだという。
話をお聞ききしたのは、藤井製桶所3代目の上芝雄史さん。
今、また発酵ブームもあって木桶の需要は上向いていると、にこやかな笑顔で話す上芝さんは現在、御歳75歳。
昭和40年代以降、木桶の需要は低下の一途を辿り、一度は会社を閉じるほど厳しい時代を生き抜いてきた。その頃を振り返り「ただ、しのいだのです」とひと言おっしゃった。
机の周りに山積みになっている歴史的文献や資料の中身は全部、上芝さんの頭の中に収まっている。聞かせていただいたお話を文字起こししただけで、きっと貴重な歴史的資料になるはず。

He thought it might turn into a building, so he decided to make it.
The person who spoke to us was Takeshi Ueshiba, the third generation owner of Fujii Seiokejo.
Now, with the fermentation boom again, the demand for wooden barrels is picking up, says Mr. Ueshiba, now 75 years old, with a smile on his face.
In the 1970s, the demand for wooden barrels continued to decline, and the company was forced to close its doors at one point. Looking back on those days, he said, `I just endured.''
The contents of all the historical documents and documents piled up around his desk are all stored in his head. I'm sure that just transcribing the story I heard today will become a valuable historical document.
